Imagine that in your culture a virgin will be betrothed to a man
by the two families involved. Odds are they will love one another,
because during the time of Christ villages were tight knit groups,
and marriages were a very big deal, for the families and the virgin
bride involved. A big deal that would have been nicely passed down
to the western culture had they realized that what God said about
treating a woman as a precious gift of God in the man's life was
the intent all along; but, sadly the West missed it! Back to
Nazareth, the village that was now a hotbed of buzz, the virgin,
wasn't a virgin! The families knew, but nobody else,(at this
point), would; but they knew, soon Mary would begin to show, and
then what? Joseph was facing two very immense decisions regarding
this lovely woman, the first; if she loves me why did she go against
every belief we have and give herself to another man? Second, what
ought I, as a man who believes somehow God has me in this mix
for a reason; to do? Those are heavy questions, they were heavy
for Joseph, they are heavy for anybody.
Truth is Joseph didn't really know what he was going to do - he
knew only a scant few facts about things; and the few facts that
he was familiar with, didn't tell him what he needed to know. If
he turned to Mary he got a tale that made no sense whatsoever, she
might be telling the truth, but if she was, it wasn't the truth he
wanted to hear, and if it was a fabrication, it was the best tale
that anyone had ever told, but Joseph couldn't imagine her being
that way. If what Mary was saying wasn't true, then she was in
some bizarre form of cover up for someone, and that made no sense
at all, since their time of betrothal, Mary hadn't even appeared
to be interested in anyone else, why would she? Joseph was very
perplexed, and so, he sought an answer from his heart. The Bible
tells it in an interesting way, Joseph felt these things in his
heart and as he went to sleep the Bible says:
Mat 1:19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just [man],
and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded
to put her away privily.
Mat 1:20 But while he thought on these things,
behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream,
saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto
thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her
is of the Holy Ghost.
