Somebody is praying...

Image
Can life actually be a vignette and not a novel? It always fascinates me to hear the responses of those who claim they don't believe in God when someone says that they will pray for them.  Especially in the midst of tragic moments, momentous events such as births and deaths, and life changing events; the mention of someone who says they will pray for you, simmers the most anti- of anti God types.  Ever notice that?  Sure you have, but was it a vignette or the beginning of a novel? You were expecting, something else?  Do you think God expects something else? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFl1VgNfU8w

Not So Fast There Friend

Image
View Site For This Poster CLICK HERE When you really care for somebody, think of them frequently, respect their opinion about things, honestly thrive on the time that you are able to be with them; they matter to you.  So it is when they are not in touch with you, or, you lose contact with them, that you notice the absence of them in your life. Fast forward that to how we react and act toward the church and church life, and even Christianity in the world today? For a moment put aside the grief you may think you can justify against this noble organization, rather, think of it based on the above, from the churches point of view?  What is horribly amusing is the rise of the behavior which used to be held at bay by the church, and how even those who profess to be against the church, find that they are in alignment with what the church would say.  A friend of mine, Chris Voss, just released a blog about sexting, an aberrant form of text video cellular that l...

What Do You Think? Proverbs 22:6

Image
Click to Web Site of Image "What we have here is failure to communicate, now, that's not the way I wanted it, that's the way he wants it."   Those famous words are part of one of my favorite movies, "Cool Hand Luke," it has a lot to say to somebody who is wondering about life, hope and rules. "Cool Hand Luke," was a values based movie about values when such wasn't cool, it had a heavy moral within it, as does our Proverb for today, 22:6 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7gzI9gj3eU We're putting together a deeper section on this, because it is so often mis-interpreted. How you raise your child, may, or, in this day and age, as at no other time in history, affect how they live. We live in a time when the power, raw power of the media, and social media, FaceBook, for example, are not only as influential as a parent, but many times are viewed as more influential. We can continue to deny that in main stream evangelical relig...

Oh Quit It...Conversations

Image
"Well my time is already tied up, so I just don't know where he thinks I can find the time to do that?"  Ever hear somebody saying something like this when asked if they could do something concerning church or volunteer work?  Now in this blog we're going to go into why church work and volunteer work, ought to be the same thing, and my hope is that some Christian's will read this and just get furious and write me all sorts of really mean and nasty stuff- do it, defend your way of life; anybody should, we all should, but when we're wrong, we ought to be big enough to admit it, and correct it (!) (NOTE I DIDN'T SAY MOVE ON- MOVE ON  ISN'T GODLY...we'll "scuss" about that in "taking it deeper")  Christian's need to correct it.  Do you correct it? When  you get mad at somebody, without cause, and they get mad at you, without cause, do you correct it, or let it sit?  Heat on ice...melts the ice and turns it in...

Being Versus Considering Being

"Aw c'mon Dr"D" your playin word games with us again." No- no I'm not, this isn't semantics, there is a definite difference between being, and, considering, or thinking about, being.  In one sense, there you are, reading this, in the other, you are mentally and therefore, spiritually (see how those two are connected? Meaning, can you be spiritual without a mind?) concerned about and wondering about somewhere else. Edmund Burke "The people are Protestants... a persuasion not only  favourable to liberty, but built upon it...."   imagine the enormous impact that a person can have when they take their vows seriously?  Imagine if we actually taught our children to plan ahead, see their future as being real and attainable, and; to plan for it accordingly.  "OK great Dr."D" are you saying that we don't?"  In fact what I am saying is that we not only don't plan, but we don't consider the future of what we...

"Say It Ain So Joe..."

Image
Oh gosh, don't you just hate the sweaty hot summertime? Heat so intense that you bust out a sweat going from the car to the house? Maybe it was such a hot time "in the old town tonight,"                 when a young lad, shocked at the accusations, against his favorite baseball hero asked with a cry in his voice- "say it ain' so Joe?" It's not dry heat here in the South of the U.S., so to my readers in the Greek Isles, China and Russia, folks you are better off there, than we are, here, in terms of heat. One time on a mission in New Orleans I was fussin' about the heat going into the worship service and Chris who was handling the reception desk said, "Ah Bray (Cajun accent a bit) ain nothin compared to Hell..." He was smilin' when he said it...thank God - or else I might've wondered... So you can tell I'm no fan of heat time- but it's here, and what I mean is, this blog may draw ...

You Don't See It Yet - Fourths

Image
Split it into fourths and you have half of the halves, or, a good basic starting point for splitting up a pie?  We cut the pizza into eighth's and because it is so rich by the time we doctor it up; that those are plenty for our family.  We always have enough to eat, we never want for water, and we have wonderful electric appliances; we have it good.  We don't truly know how blessed we are because most of the time in the U.S., we think in U.S. terms and don't consider the rest of the world.  This has gotten us into some weird situations a time or two, but for the most part, America is loved or hated, there is no middle ground where we are concerned.  So it is that we find that type of thinking permeates our culture, and it's actually the type of thinking that Jesus often proclaimed.  It is interesting that when it came to different ways of working for God, however, Jesus made clear that if they aren't against us, they are, for us?  How big an image of G...

You'd do what?

Image
Dr. Covey called it "the collective dialogue of the deaf," meaning, blissfully unaware of the problems, we strive through life never coming to grips with life, until, life is over.  We listen but don't hear; see but don't look, we are involved but not intensely so; until it's a crisis, and the list goes on and on. You know that the problem is that this is true of us; we love God, so long as, God isn't bugging us to change.  We're thankful for the earnest gift of the Holy Spirit, so long as, we don't have to respond to conscience?  We respect Jesus, so long as, Jesus doesn't ask us to forgive in a way which is not only costly to our human ego, but downright difficult to our pride.  Oh we have tons of them, don't we- only in the end, the only person we've fooled is us; God isn't like us, we don't fool Him.  Wouldn't it be interesting if at the start of each new day we not only expressed to God what we appreciated, thanking God for...

Read And Then ...

Image
Someone said the other day, "I read your writing," which usually I take as a compliment, but what I didn't know was what was coming next when they said, "and I don't agree with what you said, and here is why," now I was really loving it, because this is what anybody who writes desires, that those who differ with them would say so, and say why.  This is also, in my heart, what Jesus did, which is why, those who worship Him as the savior, are so splendid in how they do what they do, and those who don't, revere Him anyway.  Can the same be said of you and your conduct?  Would someone say, I know them, and I don't like them, but I do respect what they represent?  Read the statement and then... After finishing a recent read, my week is five books a week , or more, and it's basically forced reading. Someone asked me once if I speed read, truthfully, no, wish I could get the hang of that, have tried, but just force myself to read; and so, absorb five books a week. My contention is that anyone who would force themselves to consume books, could easily do the same or more; and books are important. Someone mentioned once that the only things that count in a life are the people you know and the books you read? What do you think? Does that sound true? Would the Bible, do you think, have something to say about that (hint...in the Old Testament you'll see the word wisdom? Hmm) - anyway, we know if a subject is testable as to truth, we're gonna see it in the scripture. We've seen this time and again, subjects that people believe wouldn't be in the Bible, turn out to be in the Bible and be mentioned in a relevant way. It is not odd, it is sensible, given that...
